Grab the Sunshine While You Can
On a recent weekend away, the weather decided not to cooperate, and despite beautiful sunny days for weeks before, the weekend I chose to head to the beach, it rained. It didn’t just rained, the wind howled and debris was flying all over the place.
For a brief 2 hours on the Saturday though, the sun came out. I grabbed this opportunity in case it didn’t repeat itself, to take a few happy snaps:
Here are some photos when the sun was out - it makes such a difference.
Never assume the sun will return, because in this instance, it didn’t! As it was still morning and the sun hadn’t finished rising, it bathed some buildings in light, which was lovely. So, always find where the sun is hitting a building on an angle and take that photo.
Remember still to frame the image - in this case I used the tree and deck chairs.
Here is what the weather turned into later that day - not exactly ideal for going to the beach. They had 4 metre swells and had closed the beach to swimming.
Sometimes misty, raining weather can create some fantastic landscapes - especially in black and white. Traditionally, black and white photography works better for portraits. But, when you’ve got a lack of colour in your image through bad weather, in a landscape, try using either the Gradient Map tool in Photoshop, or in the case below, Channel Mixer (selecting the Monochrome box):

So, it’s not a complete lost cause. My moto is, there’s always an alternative - it just means you might need to be a little more creative.
