Business Resume Portrait Photography
Resumes are becoming like calling cards, and a decent photograph is almost mandatory. So, what makes a good resume photograph?
It’s pretty easy - here are the basics:
These steps are the same for men and women - but, women do have the added advantage of applying makeup:
Background
- A single, neutral color
- Not overpowering, or too noticeable
- No landmarks or buildings in the background
- No patterns (or if there is, make sure it’s very basic). That is, no lines (e.g. VJ walls, or a lamp post in the background)
Clothing
- Something that doesn’t clash with the background
- Doesn’t overpower the person
- Mild pattern (if any)
- Collared shirts for the guys - with a tie if you want to make it more formal
- Choose a color that makes you look happy and vibrant - but nothing too over the top (like leopard print).
Accessories
- None for men
- Ladies - small pieces and nothing too showy
- Make sure it suits what you’re wearing
- Makeup - ladies, use it sparingly. No bright colors on your eyes. No deep red lips - something neutral and add a bit of gloss to the lips.
Angle
- Stand the subject slightly on the diagonal from the photographer, so they are looking sideways and back to the photographer
- Take the photo from a slight downward facing angle - so the photographer should position themselves to be a little taller than the subject
Finally
- Smile - a nice, natural, happy smile
- Open your eyes!
Here is a photo that I would use on a resume:
