Norfolk Island Beaches
Coming from Queensland in Australia, and having travelled a bit, I’ve seen some beautiful beaches. Norfolk Island didn’t really compare from a swimming beach perspective, but the coastline and water colour was stunning.
Because everyday was bright and sunny, my polarising filter became my best friend. I call this my camera’s sunglasses. It works particularly well when photographing water. Here is Anson Bay, which was perhaps the most visually stunning:
This particular cove is actually a beach, but the day I went there was a strong current warning. This didn’t worry some swimmers, who braved the crashing waves and the current to go for a swim. The tide also had a way of coming up very rapidly. I wanted to squat down and get some foamy water shots, but the water kept coming up too quickly, and I wasn’t going to risk my new Canon 5D like that! Here is a shot of those pesky waves:
Water and cameras really don’t go hand in hand, so the rest of my shots were taken from a safe distance away!
You can’t go to a beach and not take some sunset photographs. Here is Slaughter Bay (awful name isn’t it…) at sunset, with the warm sun baking the sand and giving everything a nice warm light (I still used a polarising filter though):
This is such a varied island from a landscape photography perspective, so there will be more in future posts!

You must be kidding when you say that Norfolk Island doesn’t measure up for swimming beaches.
Emily Bay (the Islands main swimming beach) must be the most underrated beach in the world. it is absolutely breathtaking on a clear sunny day. it is easily accessable with island families camping down along the sand dunes during the summer just to make waking up and going for a early morning swim that much easier.
it’s in my world’s top 10 beaches for sure.
Emily Bay is indeed a great place to swim. It depends on the type of beach you prefer though. I grew up with the Gold Coast (south of Brisbane) less than an hour away, so am used to those types of beaches. Emily Bay is a very protected swimming beach, which is great for kids and for snorkelling, and you’re right it is beautiful.
