Night Photography
Photographing at night can be tricky. A tripod is a necessity. What about everything you’ve heard about dusk and dawn, and how they are the best times of day to photograph? Well, for stunning skies and natural colours, yes they are the best.
But, if you want to really show off unnatural light, especially from the centre of a city, then nighttime is the time.
Here is Brisbane’s Story Bridge at night.
For these kinds of shots I like using a longer exposure, so you really get to see the colours. That can also be a drawback. Too long, and the colours look overexposed and washout the detail.
Getting night shots with water in the middle of the frame works best, as the colours will reflect off the water and really make the image look more stunning.
Here is another photo, from the same vantage point, with a wider focal length.
It’s fun getting night photographs. You don’t have to worry about losing the light, and rushing to get the shot with a window of only a few minutes (or even seconds).
