In the Shadow of Giants

Published by Alpha Murgev at 7:49 am under Travel Photography

Some things just visually catch your eye, and this scene below was one of them.  Atop the Q1 building on the Gold Coast (77 stories up), the afternoon sun was setting behind the mountains, and cast great big shadows of the high rises, over the beach at Surfer’s Paradise.  The tallest shadow is Q1, which stands out like a sore thumb.  You wouldn’t want to be getting a tan at that time of day!

Photographing through tinted glass was also interesting…

At any time of day, photographing through glass is a challenge.  The last time I was at this location I had my SLR with me, and the reflections were pretty obvious.  This time I had my Canon S80 and thought it would be worse, but as it turned out, the result was much the same.

In next week’s blog post, I’ll include some more photos of the reflections, which are actually kind of cool.

The tinted glass made all the photos appear a little green.  Thankfully, Photoshop makes fixing that incredibly easy, a little touch of Colour Balance and the photo returns somewhat to normal.  I had to add quite a lot of magenta to these photos, something I don’t normally do.

This second photo above really shows you the impact these concrete giants have - consuming nearly all the natural light that would ordinarily fall onto the beach.  Well, it makes for some interesting photos…
