Stormy Sky Photographs

Some amazing things happen in the blink of an eye. One afternoon I look out my window and it’s a normal sunny afternoon, and about 15 minutes later it looks like this…

The sky just went orange, and then the sky opened up, pouring down rain for about 5 minutes. The sky remained the colours below for about 10 more minutes, then it was all over.

Normally these kind of afternoon storms only happen in the summer, so in autumn they’re pretty unusual. When I saw the sky I quickly grabbed my SLR, tripod, telephoto lens and shutter release cable and ran to my balcony.

Some of the colour had disappeared in the short time it took me to get myself ready, but these photos are still a pretty good indication of what the weather was doing. It’s always a bit tricky as the light is pretty low, so a tripod is a must.

Later that night I saw a few bolts of lightning, but I really wasn’t fast enough for that. I’d love to be able to take a photo that had about 10 bolts of lightning in the one shot - maybe a case of right place, right time???
